In the next class (12/8) we will practice our reading skills using texts from a British travel guide of Shanghai and some food ingredient listings.

For homework, think about the characteristics of both kinds of text and also how you read them. Then write a comment about what you think we might read about and/or what different skills we will use to read these very different types of text.

Hi, Matt! It’s been a while.
A British travel guide will tell us famous things such as places and food, and useful information like activities or good hotel. So, I think it may subheads each category. We can read more easily by using them as signs which show us what it is in each block.
Ingredient listings might be more difficult to read. Because apparently they look easy. Maybe they are written in letters of big size! So, I think we have to read carefully in stead of making light of it. Thank you^^

  2. Ichiyo Shimizu says:

I think we’ll read about information of Shanghai, like where you can find famous castles or monuments, or maybe where you can find good restaurants. As a guide of some food ingredient listings, we’ll read about what we should have attention to about food culture in Shanghai. For example, in Shanghai, people often eat something unusual for British people so if you don’t like it, you should ask a waiter if it is in the dishes that you’re going to take. It’s just a prediction and I’m not sure at all.

  3. Yao T4 says:

Hi, Matt. I’m Yao. I think the travel guide of Shanghai will first tell us how amazing Shanghai is. And then introduce the culture, famous tourist attractions, the food and the restaurants, interesting activities and etc. Usually the travel guide has some pictures with it, and it will have several subheads to make the point clear. So we should pay attention to these things.
The food ingredient listings may first tell us what the food is, and the ingredients to make it, the volume and the amount. The words could be boring unless we imagine cooking the food in our head.

  4. Yuka Hattori(T4) says:

    Hi, Matt!
We might read about recommended tourist spots and foods in Shanhai. We can know where should we go and eat when we visit there. Also, we will read about what are used in somethings like sweets or dishes. We may know which ingredient occupy what % of a food.
When we read such different types of sentences, I think it is important for us to pick up some essential words. This is because if we try to get all information in the books or ingredients lists, it will be really hard to get an important part. For example, in a guide book , we should pick up some information like a name of hotels, station names and so on.

  5. Rika Morofuji (T4) says:

As for travel guide, l guess that we will read about famous scenery, food, transportation, and so on in Shanghai . And in food ingredient lists, there will be written what is used in the food for detail.
In order to read and understand such texts, I think vocabulary or knowledge of them are needed. Also, having interest in them is one of efficient ways.

  6. Mika Osada(T4) says:

    Hi, Matt!
By reading British travel guide, we will know good information for the tourists to Shanghai: famous place we should go, famous food we should eat, some examples of a good trip, how to behave in Shanghai and the souvenir recommended etc.
Food ingredient listings would be difficult to read because there are many words I do not know.

  7. Chikako Tsuge(T4) says:

I think we will read about the best sights in Shanghai in the British travel guide. I’m hoping to read about the good restaurants to have nice meal. When we are reading this kind of text, I think it is important to catch specific names. As for some food ingredients listings, I guess we will read about a part of cooking something. But because it is a listing, I think we should read carefully, in order not to miss important information.

  8. Miki Kashiwa says:

Through the British travel guide, I think we will be able to get a lot of useful imformation. For example, the climate of Shanghai, interesting places and the way to go there or the history of them, delicious foods, famous souvenir, activities we can enjoy.
Food ingredient listings will tell us what are used to make foods, I think.

  9. Akari Yamada(T4) says:

As for British travel guide of Shanghai, I think this tells us the famous place in Britain. And also we can get an information of the place recommended for Chinese because the article title say Shanghai.
As for some food ingredients listings, it may be tells us the ingredients of food which have an bad effect on us such as fast food. Fast food has many food additives so we can know which food has the most food additives and then we can pay attention to our own daily meal.

  10. Reina T4 says:

I think we’ll read which places to visit or who’s food to eat in the British travel book. And when we read them, we should check which information we need. We always do this. But especially when we read travel, we have to do that more carefully. Travel books have too much information so it’s impossible to understand all of the information.
I think we’ll also read recipes. We should pay attention to what we use to make and the amounts of the seasoning. We always want to eat delicious meals!!

  11. Yu Kobayashi (T4)( says:

I think British travel guide of Shanghai is
the story of the guide and, he or she will tell us what is the good point and bad one as a guide in foreign country .When I read it , I try to understand the context.
And about ingredient listing , I will read about the recipe of some kind of food ,.
Last semester I read such article, but it was a little difficult. I try to keep concentrating rather than guide story.
    See you, Matt!

  12. Yu Kobayashi (T4 ) says:

II will read about the story of the guide. He or she will tells us his or her experiences as a guide in foreign country. The next article is about ingredient. I will learn the recipe and how to make it.
The difference is concentrating I think the first one needs more concentration rather than second one.because I think
first one includes the context .
    See you.

  13. Emi Tanaka(T4) says:

We will read places, food, souvenirs and events which are popular among English travelers or how we can get there. In this guide book, there may be a lot of pictures and editors must explain these things in simple words. So we should focus on these fundamental knowledge on Shanghai so as to understand them rapidly.
And about food ingredients (for example nutrition, calories and serving size), we need to check carefully percentage or unit written in small letters.

  14. Aiko Narasaki says:

Travel guides are written to give information for tourists, so it must be easy to understand. But its not enough just it is easy, because travel guides have another role. They can attract readers and invite them to the country, and guides should be interesting.

Shanghai is famous for its delicious Chinese food, so we might read about some gourmet information.

  15. Ayumi Nakahara(T4) says:

I think this travel guide tells us exciting tourists attractions in Shanghai and how to spend our time there. When we read this, I think we don’t have to read all sentences. Only picking up some important words is enough.
Meanwhile, food ingridient listings may be tells us what kind of ingridients are used in popular dishes in Shanghai, such as Shouronpou. We should read carefully in this case, because there are some peoples who have food allergies. Traveling abroad is exciting, but also it sometimes brings us danger. Before we travel abroad, we should consult about the place we will go.

  16. Keishu Joi(T4) says:

    Hello matt!

I think we are going to read about the information of Shanghai, especially about the tourisr sight. I dont know about Shanghai, so I will be fun and get much information .
Also, when we read such a guidebook, we should take only information about the spot. It is necessary for tourists to know where the spot is and what we should bring with us. However, on the other side, if we want to be excited, we should read the advertisement. It is devised by people who completely know about tourist areas and are good at writing, so it must be fun.

  17. Keisuke Koyama says:

    Hi, Matt!
Thinking of British guide of Shanghai, there must be a few explanation of the area. I think we can guess what we’re required to know by reading these explanation.
On the other hand, we’re probably not familiar with food ingredient things. we’ll be expected to presume what we should recognize from a little information.

  18. Natsumi Mizumura (T4) says:

    HiMatt!

I guess what we will read is about what is and what kind of a city of Shanghai. And it introduce where is good place for sightseeing. I’ve never been to Shanghai, so I can’t imagine what wonderful article are written.
And some food ingredients listings shows us to what the dish is constructed. And Shanghai is very famous for delicious Chinese dishes, so we will read about some Gourmet Information.

  19. Kenji (T4) says:

    Hi, Matt

I’m really looking forward to the next, because I sometime became to be confused when I read travel guides to make my trip more fun. Videlicet, I don’t know how to take advantage of them, I mean, to manage a flood of information with them. Finally I have long ceased to take such a big and fat book in my traveling and those books ended up getting less for my money.
The situation is the same with food ingredient listings. As a matter of course, since I don’t spent money especially for the “listing”, it is a little less cumbersome than the cace with travel guide.
What is necessary for me is an ability of making choice of having access to what I needs to know. As we learned last week about gamers who are good at making effective use of time and are known for their fast decision making, we can learn how to handle information around us and then to make my life more creative from unexpected place or person.

    Thanks,
    Kenji

  20. Ayaka Kishino(T4) says:

I guess we might read about the useful information about Shanghai for tourlists. For example, the transportations, the average temperature and weather, famous places, good foods, good hotels, good survenias, and the list of minimal frases which we can use in stores, hotels,on the streets and so on.
When I read travel guides, I look at a table of contents and read only just informations I want to know. If I want to know what clothes should I bring,I read the page of the temperature and weather.
Some ingredients listings will show us what is included and used in the food products. The order of the ingredients in the list is written according to the percentage which it accounts for in the products.

  21. Rio Sato says:

I think we might read how to read these different types of text effectively.
When I read texts from travel guide, I pick up only the information that I really want to know, because there are a lot of information and I will be confused if I read all of it. On the other hand when I read listings, I compare the dates to understand deeply.
Also I think we might read that which way is good for us understanding.
